Description | The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is Africa's largest hydroelectric project located on the Blue Nile near the Sudanese border in Guba, Ethiopia. It is designed to generate over 5,150 megawatts of electricity, transforming Ethiopia's power supply and enabling electricity exports across the region. The project involved construction starting in 2011, multiple reservoir fillings, turbine installations, and was completed and inaugurated in 2025 despite ongoing disputes with downstream countries Egypt and Sudan. |
