Description

Description

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is Africa's largest hydroelectric dam located on a tributary of the Nile in Guba, Ethiopia. It has a maximum power output of 5,150MW, making it one of the 20 biggest hydroelectric dams in the world. The dam aims to provide energy to millions, improve access to electricity in Ethiopia, and export surplus power to the region. The reservoir flooded an area larger than Greater London and is intended to provide steady water supply for irrigation downstream while limiting floods and droughts. The project has caused tensions with downstream countries, especially Egypt, which fears it could restrict its water supply.
