Description

The Grand Inga Dam is the world's largest hydropower project located at Inga Falls on the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is designed to have a potential capacity of up to 70 gigawatts, which would be more than double the capacity of China's Three Gorges Dam. The project aims to connect 300 million Africans to clean energy by 2030 and includes phases such as Inga 1 & Inga 2 (existing dams undergoing rehabilitation) and Inga 3 (the first and most critical phase). The estimated cost for Inga 3 is around US$13.9 billion, with the overall Grand Inga Complex costing up to US$80 billion to US$100 billion including transmission lines across Africa. The project has faced years of delays but is now moving forward with support from the South African Development Community (SADC) and interest from countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Guinea, and Angola.
