Description | The Great Nicobar Project is an ambitious maritime infrastructure development initiative by the Indian government to build a deep-draft transshipment hub at Galathea Bay in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The project aims to reduce India's dependence on foreign ports, particularly those linked to China, by creating a port with natural depths of 18-20 meters capable of handling modern mega-vessels. It includes phased development with Phase 1 expected to be completed by 2028 with a capacity of 4 million TEUs and Phase 4 by 2058 with a capacity of 16 million TEUs. The project also includes development of roads, healthcare, schools, and power connectivity to uplift local communities. |
