Description
Description | The Great Nicobar Project is an ambitious ₹81,000 crore initiative by the Indian government to establish a powerful transit hub in the Indo-Pacific region. It involves turning Great Nicobar Island into a full-scale economic and strategic hub with a deep-water container port, a greenfield international airport, an integrated township, and a gas and solar-based power plant. The project aims to boost trade, connectivity, military presence, and reduce dependence on foreign ports, while also enhancing India's strategic position near the Malacca Strait. However, it involves clearing about 130-160 square kilometers of rainforest, including tribal reserve land, raising ecological and tribal heritage concerns. |
