Description | The Great Nicobar Project is an infrastructure-intensive development of Great Nicobar Island, including a transhipment port at Galathea Bay, an international airport, a township, and a power plant. It aims to utilize the geostrategic advantage of the Nicobar Islands to become a strategic, economic, and defense center in the Indo-Pacific region. The project is expected to take 30 years for completion and includes a deep-water port handling 14.2–16 million TEU annually, a greenfield international airport, a 450 MVA hybrid power complex, and an integrated township. It is a multi-crore project costing ₹72,000–₹81,000 crore, conceived by NITI Aayog and implemented by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation (ANIIDCO). |
