Description

Description

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will remain open with basic visitor services and limited staffing from Nov. 3, 2025 through Jan. 4, 2026, amid a government shutdown. This is enabled by funding from Friends of the Smokies and a partnership of state and local entities. Popular areas such as Cades Cove Loop Road, visitor centers, and picnic areas will remain accessible. Staffing will be reduced to positions directly related to basic visitor services, with many employees facing furlough if the shutdown continues beyond Nov. 2, 2025. The funding agreement involves Friends of the Smokies, National Park Service, state of Tennessee, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and various Tennessee city and county governments. Recreation and parking fees will also support essential operations.
