Description
Description | In August 1992 a joint venture (exact shares unknown) between the U.K.’s Biwater and Engineering Consultants Group (ECG) of Egypt took over the management of Greater Cairo's new sewerage treatment plant and wastewater collection system after winning the four-year management contract in a competitive bid. The contract was designed to protect a US$3 billion capital investment that began in 1985 and involved the construction of no less than 20 water treatment plants in and around Cairo. The management contract itself was valued at 3.7 million pound sterling (US$7 million), financed through British bilateral aid. Biwater/ECG was to be responsible for the three pumping stations serving the east bank section of the citywide scheme - Ameria, Khalag and Kossous, all built by UK/local teams, with British finance. These stations were designed to transfer about 30 cubic meters a second of effluent to treatment plants under construction northeast of the city. This was equivalent to the entire sewerage produced by London. The partners also implemented a computerized maintenance system and trained Egyptian staff to take over. The initial 2 year contract was extended for 18 months until February 1996. Following the conclusion of the management contract, Biwater was retained for additional two years to provide ongoing technical assistance. None None |
