Greater Sunrise Gas Project Development

The Greater Sunrise gas project involves the development of gas fields containing an estimated 5.1 trillion cubic feet of gas located about 140 km south of Timor Leste and more than 400 km from Darwin. The project aims to produce five million metric tonnes of gas, with a timeline for production expected between 2032 and 2035. The project has faced delays due to maritime boundary disputes and disagreements over the location of gas processing facilities. Timor Leste prefers an onshore liquefied natural gas plant on its south coast, while Woodside Energy initially preferred piping gas to Darwin. Timor Leste has used its sovereign wealth fund to buy out other partners and is willing to invest more to develop the onshore concept, hoping to kick-start new industries.
