Description
Description | The future of human society will depend on innovative, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technologies. This expectation is recorded in basic documents in Bavaria (structural plan of the Bavarian State Government) and in the Czech Republic (Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialisation, RIS3). Our project will contribute to the development of the neighbouring Bavarian-Czech border regions (South-Czech district in the Czech Republic and Upper Franconia in Bavaria) with the theme “Green Bio-based Polymers” (Green Biobased Polymers, GBP). The project covers three important topics, material sciences and biotechnology in Bayreuth (DE) and biology in Budweis (CZ). For many years, Seide has been the central research topic of the research groups in Bayreuth (material science and biotechnology) and in Budweis (molecular and developmental biology), with both groups having an excellent international reputation in these fields. A mutual complement to the scientific expertise as well as the geographical proximity of the two research centres are ideal conditions for close cooperation. A total of three main activities are foreseen: (1) Analysis of silk diversity and biotechnological production of silk-based biopolymers, (2) development of biopolymer based materials for the generative production of tissue scaffolding and wound healing materials, (3) study of the biological compatibility of 3D tissue scaffolding. The complementarity of technical competences and equipment infrastructure creates the conditions for excellent research with great potential for new biotechnological approaches. Based on this regional innovation potential, new technologies, materials and processes can be developed. To implement this project, human resources (scientific staff, students, exchanges of staff and students) and mutual equipment (new acquisition of equipment, sharing of existing equipment) are needed in close cross-border cooperation (joint research, regular team meetings, interaction with international researchers at conferences). The activities of this project have a direct influence on the development of the research infrastructure in the target region. The target region will achieve this in terms of the following profit: (1) Increased visibility of basic research; (2) Improved training of students; (3) Opening up new career opportunities for young scientists by linking biology with biotechnology and materials sciences; (4) Implementation of new results in new biomedical and technical applications; (5) Increase the attractiveness of locations for excellent external scientists (brain pull). |
