Description

Description

Industrial sites are the sleeping beauties of the energy transition. They can be hotspots for the switch from fossil to renewable energy, for the production, distribution and storage of green electricity and heat. However, so far these sites have been neglected in the energy transition. Many of the businesses here feel the need to act on rising energy prices, net congestion, and environmental constraints, but are unaware of their collective potential. The transformation of industrial sites into renewable hotspots requires re-thinking public support and new business and operation models. Industrial Transition Hotspots reorganizes on-site engagement, provides feasible business cases for shared production, storage, and distribution of renewable energy, and pilots these in at least 25 projects where industrial sites raise the share of renewable energy to 40% of their consumption. Thus, Industrial Transition Hotspots shows how to reach the EUs 2030 goal on the way to climate neutrality in 2050. Industrial Transition Hotspots builds on the available technical solutions for energy efficiency, production, storage, and distribution of renewable energy. Limited awareness, missing capacities, and uncertainties about business cases now prevent the adoption of these technical solutions. Industrial Transition Hotspots overcomes the current deadlock with targeted support from awareness to action, investment and governance solutions, and capacity building. The project delivers: Joint strategy engaging and supporting industrial sites in their energy transition, fueling the green economic development and employment, Solutions and models for at least 37 industrial sites and their businesses increasing energy efficiency, producing, storing, and distributing renewable energy, while also safeguarding them from adverse effects of rising energy prices, Increased capacities for local authorities, their industrial sites, and businesses to invest and maintain site-specific circular energy systems. Overall Objective: Industrial Transition Hotspots increases the production, storage, and distribution of renewable energy on industrial sites through: Improved support; Cooperation models and business cases for production, storage, and distribution of renewable energy; Disseminating industrial site circular energy systems.
