Our analysis of the NPA opportunity is that marine resources such as seaweed (or even farmed algae) and forest residue provide great potential for North Western Europe’s indented coastline and Northern Europe’s forests, which are already aligned with significant forestry activity, to become a major bio fuel supplier. Our vision is that many SME opportunities will be spawned as SAF production is developed. SMEs will need to find ways to work with larger enterprises that specialise in forestry or marine resources. The connection with aviation and the potential benefits for regional airports is an additional boon, especially as this sector needs to make efforts to become more sustainable (both environmentally and financially). The preceeding SPARA2020project has developed our networks with key stakeholders. One output of SPARA2020 concerning public policy in relation to promoting SAF provides context for our proposed subsequent efforts.
