The Hammerfest H2 project will produce Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) in the form of compressed hydrogen, using water and renewable electricity. The project plans to install an electrolyser of 7.5 megawatt (MW) capacity. The plant will produce an estimated amount of 12 kilo-tonnes (kton) of compressed RFNBO hydrogen over a 10-year period . Description
Description | The Hammerfest H2 project will produce Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) in the form of compressed hydrogen, using water and renewable electricity. The project plans to install an electrolyser of 7.5 megawatt (MW) capacity. The plant will produce an estimated amount of 12 kilo-tonnes (kton) of compressed RFNBO hydrogen over a 10-year period . RFNBO hydrogen produced by the project will be supplied mainly to maritime off-takers. It is expected that the project will lead to the avoidance of 80 kton of CO2 equivalent emissions in its first 10 years of operation. The electricity required by the project will be sourced from the decarbonised Norwegian grid. Norway is divided into five bidding zones, with the project located in bidding zone NO4. NO4 has had a historically consistent renewable share above 130 % in the last 8 years and is expected to see renewable shares above 100% throughout the lifetime of the project. GreenH is the main beneficariy behind the project and will develop, build and operate the Hammerfest H2 project. The project will be an important part of GreenH’s aim to establish a network of RFNBO hydrogen production and distribution hubs along the coast of Norway. This project will contribute to the European Union’s aim to decarbonise the maritime sector and European Hydrogen Bank’s goal of making available 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen in Europe from domestic production by 2030. The Hammerfest H2 project is located at Rypefjorden, near Hammerfest city in Northern Norway. The location is a maritime hub in the region, minimizing the need for transport and enabling off-takers to bunker directly from the production site. The maritime off-take market potential in the area is estimated to more than 3.5 kton of RFNBO hydrogen per year. |
