Description

Description

Greensteel Australia plans to invest $500 million in a new low-emissions steel manufacturing facility in Newcastle, Australia's first new steel mill in over 30 years and the first to operate entirely on electricity. The project involves redeveloping a 70,000-square-metre site at Mayfield North, with refurbishment starting before the end of 2026 and operations expected by January 2028. The facility will produce up to 600,000 tonnes of finished steel annually, initially manufacturing reinforcing bar, with future plans for wire rod and coil production. The mill will use electric induction furnace technology, eliminating direct carbon dioxide emissions and operating independently of gas supplies by using electricity, including renewable sources. The project is expected to create over 200 full-time jobs and support additional jobs during construction and in local supply chains.
