In Uganda, only 42% of the population has an electricity connection, and in rural areas the figure is only 10%. This means that Uganda is still well below the average for sub-Saharan Africa (around 30%). However, the conditions for increasing the electrification rate have improved; the Bujagali power plant in 2012 temporarily ended the generation bottlenecks and the transmission and distribution network has recently been significantly expanded. Nevertheless, hardly any customers are connected to many of the new lines. Villages or peri-urban settlements are only a few kilometers from the existing network and could be electrified at comparatively low cost. The FC project aims to expand this approach and connect villages and peri-urban settlements to the electricity grid. This will contribute to increasing the electrification rate and to socio-economic development in the regions.
