Grid densification program to increase electricity access in rural areas

The project will finance the grid connection of communities along the existing power lines. Specifically, investments in medium and low voltage lines as well as transformers and household connections including electricity meters will be subsidized. The project is intended to reach private households as well as retail stores, smaller companies and government institutions such as schools and hospitals. The aim of the project is to improve access to and use of electricity in rural and peri-urban areas. By substituting alternative forms of energy such as diesel and paraffin, a contribution will be made to climate mitigation, as 92% of electricity in Uganda is generated from renewable sources. A grant of 10 million euros is available for the project. In view of the enormous financing requirements for electrification projects, the Ugandan government has asked for additional funds to be made available for the grid densification program.
