Description | The 273-megawatt Grootfontein solar photovoltaic (PV) project in the Western Cape, South Africa, has reached commercial operation. Developed by Scatec ASA in partnership with local investors, it is the largest co-located solar PV facility in the Western Cape and is expected to generate around 700 GWh of electricity annually, supplying over 180,000 households and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 630,000 tonnes per year. The project is part of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and is sold to Eskom under a 20-year power purchase agreement. |
