Groundbreaking Project to Unlock Nuclear Energy's Role in Hydrogen and Clean Fuels

Teesside University is collaborating with the UK National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) on a three-year project to explore how nuclear energy can co-produce hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and heat for industrial and domestic applications. The project involves developing a scaled physical mock-up of a high-temperature heat loop to model and control complex heat dynamics where multiple applications operate simultaneously, such as electricity generation, hydrogen production, chemical synthesis, and district heating. The aim is to demonstrate flexible and efficient operation of integrated systems to accelerate the transition to net zero.
