Description | Grupo CentroAmericano de Telecomunicaciones (GCA Telecom) became the first-private sector company to provide basic telephony services in El Salvador in 1998. The company obtained its license as part of the telecom deregulation reform in the country which started in 1996. The company awarded a two-year contract to US-based World Access Inc to supply, install, and interconnect the necessary infrastructure equipment for GCA Telecom. The US$20 million contract was for the installment of Wireless Local Loop technology. GCA Telecom planned to provide basic telephony services in 11 regions of the country, serving up to 60,000 subscribers. The company's concession area was formed by regions where the state-owned telecom company Antel or CTE fail to provide services. |
