Description | The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is facing a projected 235,000-unit rental housing shortfall over the next decade due to slowed construction and high demand from population growth. Despite a historic rental boom in 2024 with nearly 35,000 new rental units completed, construction completions are expected to fall to a 20-year low by 2028. Many rental projects are stalled in proposal or planning stages due to long approval timelines and high costs. The Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) calls for government action to reduce development charges, lower property taxes, and expand lending programs to address the shortage. |
