The Guayas Province Highway Construction Project for Ecuador will assist in financing a program of road construction in Guayas Province. It is designed to tie in with main roads in neighboring provinces. Currently, adequate connections between provinces on the coast and the central plateau are lacking. These main highways mostly consist of rough roads which can only be used during the dry season. The project will implement a program of highway construction to convert eight of these existing roads radiating from Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest city and greatest port, to all weather highways that will extend into agricultural areas. Its components are: 1) reduction of grade; 2) raising fills; 3) correction of areas of improper sub grade; 4) enlargement of bridges and culverts and building new bridges where necessary; 5) extension of the right of way and paving; 6) construction of a central maintenance shop; and 7) acquisition of car ferries. These improvements will permit new land to be cultivated, increase agricultural income, and make year round highway transportation possible. The Guayas Province Highway Construction Project will help to increase the economic development of Guayas Province and the country of Ecuador as a whole.
