The project deals with the sustainable upgrading of the historic Gunthersteig as a hiking and pilgrimage route and thus the development of the common border area, taking into account the ecological balance and the regional intangible natural and cultural heritage. With the theme of natural and historical cultural heritage, among others in the form of symposia, information events, information boards, brochures, website and thematic exhibitions, the intangible cultural heritage is preserved and passed on to a large number of visitors. With the improvement of the pathway and the upgrading of the existing historical hiking and pilgrimage path, the border region is made more attractive as a living and holiday area, the value of life increases. In doing so, emphasis is placed on a close to nature and sustainable appreciation, which takes the regional specialities authentically into account, taking into account trends such as regionality, authenticity, reflection on the essentials and spirituality. Special importance is attached to the specialist symposia, which take place at the beginning of the project, which, together with experts such as historians, scientists, departments, as well as the local population and multipliers, contribute to the life and work of St. Gunther for his time but also to reveal future generations as an intangible cultural asset, to be prepared and incorporated into the further activities of the project, such as the creation of an educational path as an essential basis. This project will fill a gap in the existing cross-border network of hiking trails and create the link to the Cross-border Goldsteig project. Thus, it contributes with a high-quality path to the comprehensive development of the border region as a sustainable holiday and hiking destination. The previously weaker border region, characterised by Iron Curtain and Nature and National Park, can benefit from this development, reducing rural exodus in the longer term by creating jobs. The cross-border path and the common measures can reduce barriers and the consequences of the Iron Curtain. As the person of St. Gunther, his work in the region and the impact on the further development of the region focus on the content enhancement of the Gunthersteig, will contribute to raising awareness of the common cultural heritage of people on both sides of the border. Cultural identity and integrity are promoted. Through the joint marketing of the cross-border Gunthersteig, significantly more people are reached than before and can be sensitised to the natural and cultural heritage in the border region. The target groups of the measures are locals, excursion guests and holidaymakers, hikers and pilgrims, children and adults, pupils and cultural enthusiasts.
