H4PERION Hydrogen Maritime Innovation Project

The H4PERION project, coordinated by the University of Vaasa, aims to demonstrate the safe and reliable use of a hydrogen-capable internal combustion engine on a large oceangoing vessel. It involves developing a new engine concept using hydrogen and biomethane, a modern fuel blending and supply system, and a new exhaust aftertreatment approach. The technology will be installed and tested on the commercial vessel Aurora Botnia and in a laboratory environment, supported by a digital twin model. The project includes 16 partners from seven European countries and is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe program with €11.2 million until 2030.
