H4PERION Zero-Carbon Shipping Project

H4PERION is a four-year EU-funded Horizon Europe project led by the University of Vaasa in Finland, aiming to develop and demonstrate solutions to improve engine efficiency and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in long-distance shipping. Wärtsilä contributes by developing a combustion concept for internal combustion engines to operate safely and efficiently on a blend of hydrogen and biomethane, targeting up to 100% hydrogen operation in open-sea conditions. The project includes sea trials onboard Wasaline's ferry 'Aurora Botnia' and laboratory testing of an identical full-scale engine, with data feeding into a digital twin model for future design optimization.
