Description

Hahnemann University Hospital, a safety-net hospital in Philadelphia, was acquired in January 2018 by private equity firm Paladin Healthcare through its subsidiary American Academic Health System (AAHS) for $170 million. The acquisition involved $120 million in high-interest loans and sale-leaseback of hospital buildings, increasing financial pressure on the hospital. The hospital's financial position worsened, leading to layoffs, lawsuits, and ultimately filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2019, followed by closure approximately three months later. The hospital's real estate was sold separately to another private equity firm in 2021.
