Description

Description

The project will determine and construct the appropriate infrastructure at the closed Highway 101 Landfill (closed in 1996) for control and treatment of landfill gas. The landfill gas control project will be completed at the Highway 101 landfill within the boundaries of the closed landfill cells, a previously cleared and developed area that is a landfill with existing leachate and gas collection piping and collection system and a fully vegetated cap. The landfill cells cover an area of approximately 498,507 square metres. Since 2005 a private company has been collecting methane gas from the closed landfill to produce electricity. The private company is at the end of its agreement with HRM and HRM will regain control/responsibility for the gas collection and electricity operation. This project is to determine the upgrades and infrastructure needed for future collection and treatment of the landfill gas. This project will increase capacity to reduce pollutants as well as ensuring control of landfill gas and potential odour at the closed Highway 101 landfill, including appropriate treatment of the landfill gas and reduction of greenhouse gases.
