Halifax Transit Mill Cove Ferry Service - Phase 2

This Phase of the project will see the completion of the detailed design and construction of two net-zero ferry terminals and associated marine infrastructure, purchase of five high-speed zero emission electric ferries and construction of a maintenance facility. The Mill Cove ferry terminal will be a new facility, and a new Halifax Ferry Terminal will replace the existing aging building. In addition, a new bridge from the Bedford Highway over an existing CN rail line will be constructed to provide a direct connection that can accommodate buses, vehicles, and an active transportation (AT) path to the Mill Cove Ferry Terminal. The new Mill Cove Ferry route will help de-carbonize the transportation network and provide commuters with a fast, safe, and sustainable mode of transportation which in turn, will reduce motor vehicle congestion on the main corridors into downtown Halifax and decrease overall reliance on personal vehicles. The bridge construction will improve the region’s active transportation infrastructure and create a multi-modal transportation hub at the Mill Cove Ferry terminal. This project aligns with HRM’s Rapid Transit Strategy (RTS) and Integrated Mobility Plan (IMP), which is dedicated to creating connected, healthy, affordable and sustainable travel options. This project also supports the Provincial Sustainable Development Goals Act and mandate to begin significant electrification of public transit as well as HRM’s HalifACT 2050 as it works to de-carbonize transportation and municipal operations.
