Description
Description | Halifax Regional Municipality is in the final stages of designing the Cogswell Redevelopment Area in downtown Halifax, which is one of the biggest city-building projects in the history of Halifax and will create a stronger, more inclusive network of communities. The proposed project, led by the Halifax Regional Water Commission, would support an ambient temperature district energy system (DES). The system would supply renewable energy from the nearby Halifax Wastewater Treatment Facility’s wastewater effluent to six mixed-use buildings within the Cogswell Redevelopment Area. This type of system is highly energy efficient and leads to minimal GHG emissions and will provide customers with a plentiful, rate-stable and clean energy source for years to come. The annual energy transfer to/from the Cogswell buildings at maximum buildout is estimated to be 44,014 MWhe (26,267 MWhe Heating; 7,713 MWhe Domestic Hot Water; and 10,034 MWhe Cooling). The peak annual demands for the Cogswell buildings are estimated to be: Heating: 18.9 MW; Domestic Hot Water: 3.1 MW; Cooling: 14.1 MW. Halifax Water will own and operate the project assets. Halifax Water will be the Ultimate Recipient of the funding. Halifax Water is uniquely placed to deploy this technology quickly and efficiently. This will be the first wastewater effluent-based DES in Eastern Canada. Major components for this project are the distribution piping systems, energy transfer stations, 3 building connections, and the energy center. |
