Description | Halo Industries has scaled a laser-based pilot line for silicon wafer production in Santa Clara, California. The project replaces traditional mechanical, chemical, and thermal wafering steps with laser-based manufacturing methods, advancing from one-off wafer production to low rate initial production and customer validation. The pilot system achieved 116 seconds per wafer against a 20 seconds target, 89% average yield against a 95% target, less than 5 micrometers thickness variation, 1-2 micrometers surface roughness, and 49% cost savings compared to wire saw operations. The process also reported 48% lower emissions and 61% lower consumables than traditional manufacturing. |
