Description

Description

Opportunity Hamilton Health Sciences’ acquired brain injury and rehabilitation services were operating from 14 different locations across the region resulting in operational inefficiencies. The government decided to invest in a new Regional Rehabilitation Centre, giving stroke, spinal cord injury, trauma and brain injury rehabilitation patients’ access to expanded programs and services in a fully accessible, state-of-the-art healing environment. Innovations The private partner signed a price-certain and schedule-certain Project Agreement to ensure the project was delivered on-time and on-budget. Results The new 106,000 square foot Regional Rehabilitation Centre is a three-storey wing with 91 inpatient beds—increasing total hospital capacity from 414 to 458— with  more space for ambulatory and outreach services, patient rooms designed to accommodate wheelchairs, a four-level pool for one-on-one therapy, outpatient and occupational therapy clinics, and a patient and family resource centre. The addition increased the size of the hospital by approximately 12 per cent. The public sector retains ownership, control and accountability for the hospital, including the provision of clinical services. The first of its kind in Canada, the outdoor therapeutic track at the Regional Rehabilitation Centre is designed for inpatients to practice their therapy on different surfaces such as stone, wood and pavement in all weather conditions. “Our partnership with the Ontario government and their shared commitment to patient care have been a rewarding experience that will benefit rehabilitation patients from across the communities they serve. This investment in the future of healthcare n our region will change and improve patients’ lives. The innovative new rehabilitation facility provides an exciting environment for our caregivers to deliver the best care possible.” - Murray Martin, President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences
