Description | The project involves treating radioactive tank waste at the Hanford cleanup site in southeast Washington by binding the waste into glass at a new factory, then disposing of the low-activity waste in a new engineered landfill called the Integrated Disposal Facility (IDF) in Central Hanford. The Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant broke ground in 2002 and has been under construction for decades. The plant now employs about 3,000 people and uses state-of-the-art technology to vitrify the waste, which is then safely disposed of in the IDF landfill designed to be expanded as needed. |
