Description | The Hanford Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) in Washington state is the world's largest radioactive-waste treatment plant. It uses vitrification technology to mix radioactive tank waste with glass-forming materials, heating it to 2,100°F to form glass that is poured into stainless steel canisters for long-term storage. The plant has reached a major commissioning milestone by solidifying more than 100,000 gallons of tank waste into glass. The plant was commissioned in December 2025 and is currently in extended hot commissioning to build production consistency and establish steady operations. |
