Description | The Hangar District is the first phase of the massive redevelopment of the former Downsview Airport Lands, known as YZD. It will include a combination of multi-residential, retail, industrial, and office properties along with amenities. The district covers about 100 acres, with 50% dedicated to employment-related development and 50% to mixed-use properties including multi-residential, retail, and office components. Retail spaces will be concentrated in a main retail spine called the Taxiway, and all mixed-use buildings will have ground-floor retail. The project aims to create a complete community with daily amenities accessible within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. Northcrest expects about 2,850 new homes mostly in mid-rise buildings in this district. The broader YZD project will provide for 54,000 people, create 30,000 homes, and 23,000 jobs. Existing buildings from the former airport will be preserved to reduce carbon impact. |
