Harambee Kingston Pine Street African Burial Ground Preservation

ongoing

The Harambee nonprofit has led the preservation and revitalization of the Pine Street African Burial Ground since acquiring the site in 2019. The site was established in 1750 for the burial of Kingston’s enslaved people and their descendants. Harambee Kingston helped protect, interpret and revitalize the long-forgotten site. The nonprofit created a cultural center and museum and partnered with SUNY New Paltz Archaeological Field School to document and protect the burial ground. This led to the site being listed in the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Harambee Kingston has placed an emphasis on community engagement, youth education, public events and sacred ceremonial services to honor those laid to rest at the site.
