Harare Light Rail Project

The project involves the development of a modern US$3 billion light rail network for Greater Harare through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, following approval by the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA) and its designation as a National Project. It will link the central business district (CBD) with major suburbs, Chitungwiza, Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, and the new city in Mt Hampden across five phases over approximately five years. Phase One, valued at around US$1 billion, focuses on the CBD-to-Kuwadzana corridor featuring elevated railway sections, battery-powered and solar-powered trains, modern passenger stations, and a main maintenance depot. Subsequent phases will extend the network to Highfield and Chitungwiza, Mabvuku-Tafara, the airport, and Mt Hampden. The initiative includes comprehensive project preparation funded by approximately US$5 million (supported by the African Development Bank) for feasibility studies, engineering designs, environmental and social impact assessments, and transaction advisory services. Once operational, the light rail system is expected to integrate with the city's bus network, significantly reduce traffic congestion, restore efficient mass public transport, and support Harare’s preparations to host the 2029 Intra-African Trade Fair.
