Hawaii Green Fee and Electrical Infrastructure Update

After wildfires devastated Maui in 2023, Hawaii's governor launched a Climate Advisory Team which recommended a new tax on tourism called the 'green fee'. This fee, signed into law in May 2025, is the first of its kind in the U.S. and is expected to generate $100 million annually for climate resiliency projects. Additionally, Hawaii is committed to updating its electrical infrastructure to improve efficiency, reliability, and transition away from oil-based electricity generation, which currently accounts for almost 70% of the state's energy. The plan includes supporting local renewable energy like rooftop solar and pushing for fuel alternatives to oil to achieve energy security, lower costs, and reduced emissions by 2045.
