Opportunity Hawkesbury and District General Hospital is a bilingual community hospital serving the Prescott-Russell region in Eastern Ontario. The hospital provides a wide range of primary and secondary healthcare services from four campuses. In order to ensure the hospital is capable of providing a wide range of services and meet future demand, the provincial government undertook the expansion and renovation of the hospital using a public-private partnership. Innovations The builder agreed to a maximum price for the hospital redevelopment which can only be adjusted in very specific circumstances, protecting taxpayers from cost overruns. Results Newly built features of the redevelopment project includes: A consolidated ambulatory care centre including specialty clinics, hemodialysis, cardiology services and complex medical day care; An expanded complex continuing care unit; A peri-operative department; Expansion of emergency services; Expansion of the intensive care unit; Redevelopment of the family birthing unit; and Additional acute care inpatient beds. Major renovations of the existing hospital accomodates: A new mental health in-patient unit; An expanded medical-surgical unit; Expanded diagnostic services; and A new operating room. Prescott-Russell will have enhanced access to health care services at a larger, more modern hospital. At all times the facility will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. The public sector remains responsible for the funding and provision of health care
