Health Innovation Experimental Landscape through Policy Improvement

EU regions are well aware of the need to increase sustainability of health-care systems and recognise that tackling this societal challange through innovation can also bring financial benefits and economic growth. This is only true however if innovations fit the complex needs of the care system, thus can be implemented and translated into successful business models. Innovative ideas often fail due to bottlenecks in innovation systems to efficiently facilitate their scouting, creating, valorising and market-uptake. Participating regions identified health, well-being & life sciences as smart specialisation sectors with high innovation potential, which they are willing to promote with substantial amounts of public funds. Health-Inno-ExPo’s overall objective is to increase the efficiency of public funding dedicated to health innovation. For this, regions need to know which are the weak ingredients of their innovation system and how to strengthen them to result in a large scale, accessible, attractive, connected and sustainable experimental landscape, also harnessing the potentials of living labs, which increase chances of health innovations to become commercially successful. As a result of interregional learning (which delivers 5 action plans based on 40 good practices identified through 80 policy learning events involving 785 people) policy instruments improve in terms of governance and ability to promote projects with higher scale, impact and sustainability in the field of health innovation, thus positively affecting 29.750.000 EUR funds. Results of the project benefit all actors of the quadruple helix, i.e. public authorities by strengthening capacities to address health innovation; research centres and businesses by improving opportunities to drive and deliver innovation; care providers by supplying them with more efficient, innovative solutions; and individuals by involving them in the innovation process to articulate their needs and make use of new technologies.
