Description

The Heidelberg Materials cement plant in Brevik, Norway, is the world’s first facility to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) directly during cement production. The plant uses advanced carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to filter up to half of its CO2 emissions, liquefies the CO2, and ships it for permanent sequestration beneath the North Sea seabed via the Northern Lights infrastructure. The project is heavily funded by the Norwegian government and aims to demonstrate how CO2 sequestration can support Europe's climate goals, despite high costs and scalability challenges.
