The Hermes 2 Demonstration Plant is an advanced nuclear reactor project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It is a Generation IV fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor designed to generate up to 50 MW of electricity for the Tennessee Valley Authority grid, supporting energy demand linked to data center operations associated with Google. The project uses TRISO fuel and molten fluoride salt coolant, with modular construction methods including precast concrete and seismic isolation. It is the first power-producing Generation IV reactor to receive a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
