Description
Description | The Hermosa mine is a major mining project in southern Arizona near Patagonia, planned by South32. It aims to supply critical minerals needed for batteries and energy technologies but raises environmental concerns including polluted water, shrinking groundwater, and harm to biodiversity including endangered species. The project involves pumping large amounts of groundwater from an aquifer, which contains harmful substances like antimony and selenium, posing risks to human health and local waterways. The mine has a projected lifespan of 70 years and is expected to significantly alter the aquifer. |
