Heywood battery project

Australia’s Atmos Renewables has been cleared to proceed without environmental approval for its 300-MW/1,200-MWh Heywood battery project in the state of Victoria. The project has received a "not a controlled action" (NCA) determination under the federal government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, allowing the developer to proceed without further Commonwealth environmental assessment. The battery energy storage system (BESS) is planned to be installed in southwest Victoria, near the town of Heywood and an existing high-voltage electrical substation, providing up to four hours of energy storage. Atmos expects to receive grid-connection approval and launch construction works next year, with the battery planned to become operational in 2029. The development application still needs state authority clearance.
