Description | The project will expand the availability of potable water to the people of Hiawatha First Nation, Ontario. There are six (6) assets in the community that will be receiving the investment to upgrade their drinking water systems. They are: o Expanded LIFE Centre which includes health services, governance offices, a gym, as well as a cultural and a childcare area. Altogether, roughly a 30,000 square foot (ft2) asset o 5-Plex residential complex (6,000 ft2) o 6-Plex residential complex (9,500 ft2) o Church (2500 ft2) o Administration building: all administrative and finance offices (7,500 ft2) o Serpent Mounds Park: 72 acres, 500 ft2 water plant with 50,000 litre reservoir The project will involve an upgrade to the water treatment plant by replacing 2 water distribution pumps, 3 chlorine pumps, 1 turbidity analyzer, and 1 coagulation system. It will also include the replacement of a pressure tank, media and cartridge filters, ion exchange system, UV disinfection system and security at the point of entry for 5 communal drinking water systems; install enclosures around water treatment equipment in 2 locations; install 1 kilometer of water distribution pipes to the LIFE Centre and a 1 kilometer pipe on Sopers Lane; and replace 3 low-yield wells and decommission 20 wells that are not in use. The project will improve the capacity, efficiency and ability to treat and deliver water within the community, extend the operational life of the water treatment systems, and mitigate groundwater contamination by decommissioning wells. |
