Description

The project is located about 40 kilometers east of La Paz on the Taquesi River and consists of two new run-of-river hydroelectric power plants in cascade (85 MW) and an existing refurbished 850-kW facility for a total capacity of 85.8 MW. Diversion weirs in the river and tunneled penstocks will provide water to the turbines. It is intended to be operated as peaking plant about 3 hours daily. The primary sponsors are Tenaska International (75%), International Mining Company S.A. (12.5%), a Bolivian mining company that operates mines in the area and own much (90%) of the land to be used for the project, and Hydro Power SFL (12.5%). The project company, Hidroelectrica Boliviana has had several technical studies performed, including a pre-feasibility study, a full EIA, a hydrology study and a market study. The company has received a local and federal environmental authorization to construct and operate the project. In Oct. 2000, the company received support from the USAID. Construction works are underway, and operation was expected to start in Jan. 2001. Electricity generated by the facility will supply the La Paz region power grid. None None
