Description | Hidroelectrica Rio Hondo was a 32 MW hydro facility in Rio Hondo (Deep River), in the rural Zacapa region in southeastern Guatemala. The electricity from the project was to be sold on the spot market for a user population that is largely poor. The project was designed to replace a 3 MW hydropower facility on the same site that was damaged by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. The project was being sponsored HydroWest International, a subsidiary of Alaska Power & Telephone. The project reached financial closure in August 2005 when the Overseas Private Investment Corporation approved financing for US$41.6 million. In July 2005, Villagers in the Río Hondo community of voted against the hydro project in a referendum. Construction was expected to take 36 months and operations were tentatively scheduled for 2008. |
