Description

The project includes the construction and operation of a 20-MW hydro power plant. The power plant was designed based on the "peaking plant" concept, which allows the plant to store enough water to produce 20 MW during the peak periods. The project comprises a total investment of US$ 36.6 million, of which US$ 18 million was provided by the IAIC in Nov. 1999. In 2003 Guatemala's environment ministry shut down the Las Vacas plant due to environmental contamination. The Environment Ministry ordered the plant closed after the plant released wastewater sludge into the Motagua River and killed thousands of fish. The plant was to remain closed until a government-led investigation concluded. http://www.cnee.gob.gt/pdf/resoluciones/2000/50-2000.pdf http://www.cnee.gob.gt/pdf/resoluciones/2002/58-2002.pdf http://www.mma.es/oecc/pdf/ca21_2.pdf http://spanish.iic.int/newsrelease/view.asp?id=122 None
