Description | This project is a 13.1-MW hydroelectric plant located in San Carlos. The plant was developed on a Build-Own-Operate basis by Hidroelectricas Aguas Zarcas. The project's total cost was $15 million in 1994. The power plant started commercial operations in 1996. Hidroelectricas Aguas Zarcas signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), the Costa Rican national electricity utility company. The power purchase agreement was one of the 20 contracts that ICE signed with private developers at the beginning of 1990s. Only six projects have an installed capacity of 10-MW or more. The project partially was financed by the IFC. |
