Description
Description | Ability to distinguish the faintest signals in presence of powerful interferers (high instantaneous dynamic range) is often the most critical design parameter of receivers, especially in defence. With phenomenal scaling of digital processing performance and efficiency it is increasingly advantageous to move functions from analogue domain to digital achieving virtually ideal mixing precision, no phase noise issues, arbitrarily low noise floor, incredible filter sharpness and other signal processing properties (realistically) unachievable in physical (analogue) domain. This is at the core of the Software Defined Radio (SDR) architectures where Digital Signal Processing (DSP) enables new capabilities together with high level of programmability, upgradability and flexibility – all critical in long lived defence systems. Sigma Delta ADC’s are the technology of choice in low frequency applications (e.g. audio) when high dynamic range and low power is required. However, there are significant technical hurdles that need to be overcome to make the Sigma Delta ADC technology suitable for direct RF sampling applications in the defence domain. The HIDRA project is tackling challenges of dynamic range, programmability, power consumption and integration through a series of system and component level technological advancements. The project will result in a modular chiplet architecture with carefully co-designed components leveraging best IC technologies for specific parts of the RF signal chain comprising direct RF sampling chiplet and high RF power handling chiplet. The project provides a viable path towards addressing one of the European technology shortfalls in the key area of semiconductor data converters for defense applications. It will strengthen the security of supply and contribute to European non-dependence by leveraging strength of current European leadership in advanced node FD SOI fabrication processes coupled with European GaN on SiC capabilities and know-how. |
