Description

Description

Backbone infrastructure in challenging geographical areas like islands require improved capacity, robustness, flexibility and network intelligence to meet the need for increased network capacity and cope with growing data traffic volumes. In the Aegean Sea, along Amorgos, Astypalea, Kos, Sifnos, Folegandros, Euboea, Chios, Lesvos, Limnos, Thasos, and Skyros islands, the Project covers works to build seven new submarine optical fibre links. The overall length of the newly deployed submarine backbone infrastructure will cover 563 km of submarine segments and 231 km of terrestrial ones, which will interconnect the submarine links to the respective terrestrial exchange points. In line with the objectives of the Digital Global Gateway Strategy of the EU, the Project will contribute to increasing the network capacity and reducing the network latency for critical applications. It will also contribute to enhancing traffic protection through link redundancy and multiple path-based impact mitigation in case of link failures.
