Description

Description

Opportunity The Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe was released by the Province of Ontario in 2006 and aims to revitalize downtowns around Lake Ontario, provide housing options to meet the needs of people at any age, curb sprawl, and reduce traffic gridlock by improving transportation options. Extending Highway 427 in order to provide an enhanced freeway route into York Region and the Vaughan Business area is one of the Province’s transportation objectives for this plan. Results The Highway 427 expansion project includes: A new 6.6 kilometre four- and six-lane extension from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive with three interchanges; A four kilometre road widening from south of Albion Road to south of Steeles Avenue—from six to eight lanes from south of Albion Road to south of Steeles Avenue, and from four to eight lanes from south of Steeles Avenue to Highway 7— and creation of a median for High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. The project provides congestion relief, reduce commute and travel times and provide an economic boost to the region by facilitating trade.
